Abstract
Abstract: This study aims to analyze the impact of environmental turbulence on environmental sustainability and financial performance of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Padang City, with environmental sustainability as a mediating variable. Environmental turbulence, including market changes, policies, and economic dynamics, is considered a significant challenge for SMEs to survive amidst uncertainties. The study applies Partial Least Square - Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) using data collected through questionnaires from SME owners and employees. The findings reveal that environmental turbulence does not have a direct significant impact on financial performance but positively affects environmental sustainability. Furthermore, environmental sustainability significantly contributes to improving SMEs’ financial performance. These results indicate that adopting sustainability practices, such as reducing resource usage and producing environmentally friendly products, can serve as a vital adaptive strategy to enhance efficiency, competitiveness, and profitability in the long term. This study recommends the importance of government and stakeholder support in helping SMEs integrate sustainability into their operations to create stability amidst business environment dynamics.
