Abstract: The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in higher education is growing, yet descriptions of how it is used in Biology learning at the study-programme level remain scarce. This study describes AI use in Biology learning among Tadris Biologi students of the 2023 cohort at UIN Sumatera Utara across eight aspects: frequency, type of AI, purpose, use for understanding Biology material, perceived benefits, challenges, information verification, and responsible use. A descriptive quantitative survey was administered through Google Form. Data came from 71 consenting students (total sampling of 72 students). The instrument contained 3 characteristic questions and 23 Likert-scale statements; all items were valid (r = 0,631–0,910, above the critical value of 0,2335) and the five Likert aspects were reliable (Cronbach’s α = 0,775–0,911). Data were analysed using percentages and mean scores. 87,3% of respondents used AI at least several times a week, ChatGPT was the most-used platform (93,0%), and the main purpose was understanding difficult Biology material (76,1%). Mean scores of the Likert aspects fell in the high to very high categories (3,97–4,25). Students reported clear benefits but were also aware of the need to check AI output and worried about dependence on the technology. The findings can inform lecturers and the study programme in preparing guidelines for AI use that support independent understanding.
